The latest LTO generation 9 specifications cater to the rising need for safeguarding and archiving extensive data by significantly enhancing tape cartridge capacity compared to the previous generation.
LTO generation 9 introduces a well-balanced approach between technology benefits and cost considerations. It offers an impressive 18 TB tape cartridge, addressing the current demand for storage space. This signifies a 50% capacity increase from LTO-8 and an extraordinary 1400% increase from the technology introduced a decade ago, with LTO-5. The roadmap for the future aims to maintain this momentum, doubling capacity with each successive generation.
Furthermore, LTO generation 9 specifications encompass already established features, including multi-layer security facilitated by hardware-based encryption, Write-Once, Read-Many (WORM) functionality, and support for the Linear Tape File System (LTFS). Notably, these specifications maintain full backward compatibility, allowing seamless reading and writing with LTO generation 8 cartridges.
These enhancements solidify LTO tape's position as a robust, scalable, and adaptable open tape storage format. This format instills greater confidence in secure offline storage, particularly in countering the rising threats of cyberattacks. LTO generation 9 serves as a powerful solution to effectively mitigate the impact of these evolving risks while offering substantial storage benefits.
