TLDR ; Neo+ is the more affordable Non-ECC model with reduced ram. Other hardware and software specs are identical to Plus series.
Synology has introduced a new DiskStation neo+ Series, consisting of the DS1825neo+, DS1525neo+, DS925neo+, and DS725neo+. Neo happens to be an acronym and not the Neo as in New . Synology defines NEO as Non ECC Option . Since memory prices have been increasing, Synology wanted to offer more cost-effective versions of its popular Plus-series NAS models.

So while the DS725+ and DS925+ have same amount of RAM ( Just Non ECC versions), the difference is more significant in DS1825neo+ and DS1525neo+, because they have less RAM compared to Plus models
Everything else remains the same- these are essentially the Plus series with Non ECC Ram.
You can upgrade to ECC later if you want (as long as you dont mix ECC with NON ECC)
First, ECC stands for error correction. So ECC Ram has a mechanism built in to repair data corruption - much like the checksums and parity mechanisms used in RAIDs. Non-ECC RAM doesnt have this capability.
But here is the thing: most consumer computers and many consumer NAS models don’t use ECC RAM anyway. Its not that non-ECC RAM is inherently failure-prone. For home users and even small businesses non-ECC RAM can be adequate.
The decision is to weight the cost versus the additional protection provided by ECC memory.
Second, you can upgrade a neo+ model to ECC RAM later. Of course you cannot mix ECC and non-ECC memory. But if you decide later when RAM prices become reasonable again (we can wish!), you can remove the supplied non-ECC memory and replace it with supported ECC memory. Your invetement is protected this way.
