Synology Releases SSDs

SAT5200 is a 2.5" SATA SSD available in 480GB, 960GB and 1.92TB capacities.  SNV3400 is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD available in 400GB and SNV3500 is an M.2 2210 400GB SSD.

Synology best known for their Network attached storage and routers based on their own firmware, has released their own SSDs.

This is not an unusual move, given the popularity of the Pure flash based Storage and the Industry predictions of growth in Flash based storage. Synology FlashStations have been available for a very long time - with Specific RAID system for Flash, Synology NAS like other popular NAS are unpopulated and the System Integrator or end users, use storage from other vendors like WD, Seagate, Kingston, Samsung or Micron to populate the NAS. It changes with Synology branded SSD, since you can have a fully populated Pure-Flash NAS from Synology now.

Need for Synology Branded SSD

Synology hopes to tackle 2 problems with Synology branded SSD

1. Endurance and Performance for NAS
These SSDs will be designed for NAS. Endurance and Performance will be suitable for NAS environment. Though the High endurance SSDs exist with major Storage brands ( Seagate Ironwolf 110 and WD Red SA500 SSD), they are not very popular and the SIs tend to use consumer grade SSDs with NAS. In Synology lab test they have seen Over 2x IOPS v.s. Intel D3-S4510 3.84TB and Samsung PM883/SM883- Which is HUGE.

2. 100% Compatible with Synology
Each time Synology releases a new firmware or a storage vendors releases a new SSD model, it has to be checked for compatibility. With Synology's own produced SSDs there will be tight integration with Synology DSM and compatibility will be thoroughly validated. Within DSM you can see the Estimated LifeSpan of Synology SSD which is a result of the integration into DSM.

For the end user , it means a top performing SSD that's always compatible with Synology NAS, covered under a single warranty with a single Vendor.

2 Product lines - SAT5200 2.5" SATA and M.2 NVMe SSD SNV3400/SNV3500

The first release has 2.5" SATA and M.2 NVMe models. There is no M.2 SATA model . Between SNV3400 and SNV3500 there is only form factor difference.

Both the SSDs have E2E ( End to End Data Protection) to ensure that data can be protected during transmission through error detection and correction. Both the models also boast of PLP( Power Loss Protection) with onboard capacitors that allows to Flush data in flight to NAND Flash memory during an event of power loss. Endurance of these SSDs are very high putting them in Enterprise category.

The following table shows major specifications of these SSDs
